Australia speeds up student and visitor visas

Australia has increased the processing speed of student and visitor visas, but there are still long waits for permanent visas.

This information was provided in the latest update of the country's Ministry of Home Affairs, published on March 23, 2026, according to a report in The Economic Times.

According to new data, student visas are being processed in an average of 33 days. Most visitor visa applications are being processed in less than a day.

However, processing time depends on the completeness of the application, the speed of providing additional information, and health, character, and national security verification.

In addition, it takes an average of 87 days to process a temporary skilled worker visa. Authorities have warned that submitting incomplete applications may result in delays.

Student visa applications submitted from outside Australia are assessed under different policies, so the country's Department of Home Affairs recommends applying well in advance of the start of your course and with all the necessary documents.

On the other hand, the permanent visa process takes a relatively long time. It takes an average of 9 months to get a skilled worker permanent visa and about 17 months for a partner visa. These applications are processed based on government priority.

Priority is being given to applicants through employers in particular regional areas and those working in the healthcare and education sectors.

The Home Office said processing times are updated regularly and may vary due to factors including geographical location. Applying with complete information and required documents can help reduce delays.
