Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam said that the mystery of Elias Ali's disappearance will be solved soon. The Chief Prosecutor told reporters at his office yesterday.
He told reporters that Elias Ali was a very beloved leader and the pride of Sylhet division. Elias Ali, the then leader of the opposition party, was kidnapped from a road in Banani on the midnight of April 17 or 18, 2012. Before his abduction, two Chhatra Dal leaders from Sylhet, one of whom is Iftekhar Ahmed Dinar and the other is Junaid, were kidnapped on April 14.
Elias Ali was kidnapped within two weeks of these two people. So we found a connection between the two. We collected CDR records of 8 telephones from the telephone conversations on April 17 or 18. We found that the calls made from these numbers and the conversations that took place there seemed very unusual to us. In addition, by checking those phones, we found out that the people who used the phones also followed Elias Ali that day.
He also said, "We have already collected evidence of the connection to Elias Ali's disappearance from the statements of some witnesses in the ongoing case of Ziaul Ahsan. We believe that we will also get some information from the testimonies of more witnesses who will come forward in the future in Ziaul Ahsan's case."
The Chief Prosecutor also said, "We have arrested the then Director General of the Directorate General of Defence Intelligence (DGFI) Lieutenant General (retd.) Sheikh Mamun Khaled. The ICT investigation agency has interrogated him. The DBO of the police has also interrogated him. But we have also got some connections from him regarding the disappearance of Elias Ali."
At that time, he also said, "We are taking very strong action regarding this investigation of Elias Ali. We believe that the investigation of Elias Ali is a constructive one. At the end of the investigation, we may be able to submit a report on this matter and we also believe that at the end of the investigation of his disappearance, we will be able to uncover the real incident."
In response to the question of whether any of the family members will be called as witnesses, the Chief Prosecutor said, "Yes, family members will naturally be called as witnesses. All of his political colleagues and those who were at the hotel he was leaving that day will be called as witnesses. We are getting a lot of information. But we cannot disclose it right now for the sake of the investigation."
Earlier, two leaders of Sylhet district BNP went missing from Dhaka in early April 2012. Two weeks after the demand for their search was raised, the then BNP central organizing secretary and Sylhet district convener M. Elias Ali disappeared from Banani in Dhaka. At that time, his driver Ansar Ali was with him. After the fall of the Awami League government, the families of the four missing people became hopeful about their return. Today, it has been 14 years since Elias Ali disappeared. The mystery of his disappearance is still not solved.
Meanwhile, the country's media reported that former BNP organizing secretary M. Elias Ali was kidnapped on the orders of Sheikh Mamun Khaled. Mamun Khaled himself gave this information to intelligence officers during interrogation on remand.
Sheikh Mamun Khaled repeatedly claimed his innocence to the detectives regarding the disappearance of Elias Ali, but at one stage of interrogation, he admitted that two DGFI majors provided technical assistance during the disappearance operation. In addition, several other officers from various intelligence agencies knew about the matter in advance.
During interrogation on remand, he told the detectives that RAB completed the entire process of Elias Ali's disappearance on the orders of the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Sheikh Hasina directly contacted Major General (retd) Ziaul Ahsan and the then DG of RAB before and after the incident. Ilias Ali and his personal driver were brought back by RAB-1. Mamun Khaled also claimed that many of the officers who were involved in that operation are still in the country.
Intelligence sources say that M. Elias Ali was abducted on the orders of the then DGFI Director General, Lieutenant General (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled. On the night of the incident in 2012, as per Mamun Khaled's instructions, a special team of DGFI and RAB abducted Elias Ali.
