Sylhet 250-Bed District Hospital Approved: Operational Phase Starts Soon

The highly anticipated 250-bed Sylhet District Hospital has officially secured government approval, marking a monumental step toward launching healthcare services. The facility had been left unused for months following the completion of its physical structure. The breakthrough was confirmed on Monday (June 15) by the Minister for Commerce, Industries, Textiles, and Jute, Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, via his verified Facebook profile.

Expressing his optimism, Minister Muktadir posted, "Alhamdulillah, the 250-bed hospital in Sylhet has been officially approved today. The implementation of this vital project will elevate the healthcare standards of the region, ensuring better access to modern medical facilities for ordinary citizens. I express my profound gratitude to the Honorable Prime Minister for fulfilling this long-standing demand of the people of Sylhet."

An BDT 83-Crore Multi-Storey Mega Facility

According to official sources, the construction of the 8-storey facility—part of an ultimate 15-storey architectural blueprint—was completed in 2023 at an estimated cost of BDT 83 crore. Only minor cleaning and finishing touches remain, which authorities estimate will be completed within a month.

The structural blueprint of the state-of-the-art facility includes:

Basement & Ground Floor: Dedicated basement car parking. The first floor houses ticket counters and visitor waiting areas.

2nd & 3rd Floors: The second floor features the outdoor department, report delivery counters, and consultant chambers, while the third floor is dedicated entirely to diagnostics.

4th & 5th Floors: The fourth floor features critical care units, including Cardiac and General OTs, ICCU, and CCU. The fifth floor hosts Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, and ENT departments.

6th to 8th Floors: These floors are reserved for general wards and cabins. The hospital boasts 19 ICU beds, 9 CCU beds, and 40 private cabins.

Background of the Project

The foundation stone of the hospital was laid in January 2019 on a 6.98-acre site formerly known as the Abu Sina Hostel. Though the project initially faced local protests from civil society members advocating for the conservation of the hostel as a heritage site, the government proceeded in the public interest. Construction officially commenced in January 2020 under Padma Association and Engineering.

Commenting on the current status, Md. Abu Zafar, Executive Engineer of the Sylhet Public Works Department (PWD), stated, "All structural and civil construction works are fully complete. We are now preparing to formally hand over the facility to the respective health authorities."
