In a major boost to regional infrastructure and urban aesthetics, a picturesque hanging bridge is set to be constructed over the Surma River, adjacent to the historic Keane Bridge in Sylhet. The initiative aims to modernize the city’s connectivity while preserving the heritage of its iconic centenary bridge.

Minister for Commerce, Textiles & Jute, and Industries, Khandakar Abdul Muktadir, MP, physically inspected the potential project location on Friday (October 9, 2026) at around 3:30 PM. The inspection was part of his day-long official visit to his constituency.

Briefing reporters on the riverbank, the Minister stated, "We are taking proactive measures to enhance the structural longevity and capacity of Keane Bridge. Alongside those preservation efforts, a decision has been taken to construct a state-of-the-art hanging bridge over the Surma River."

"This striking piece of infrastructure will significantly ease vehicular pressure on the old Keane Bridge and introduce a fresh dimension to the city's transport layout," the Minister added. "Furthermore, it will act as a major tourist magnet for both domestic and international visitors, driving economic growth and enhancing Sylhet's reputation."

During the site visit, the Minister was accompanied by Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) Administrator Abdul Qaiyum Chowdhury, District Commissioner Abdullah Al Mamun, Sylhet Development Authority (SDA) Chairman Rezaul Hasan Koyes Lodi, and Sylhet City BNP General Secretary Emdad Hossain Chowdhury, alongside other local dignitaries and project officials.
