In a major initiative to relieve chronic traffic congestion across Sylhet city, Minister for Commerce, Industries, Textiles and Jute, Khondokar Abdul Muktadir, has unveiled a series of new bypass roads and major infrastructure development projects.
The Minister made these announcements on Tuesday afternoon (October 27, 2026) following the inauguration of the 'Maha-EMJA Internal Sports Competition 2026' at the Electronic Media Journalists Association (EMJA) office located in the city's Blue Water Shopping City at Zindabazar.
New Bypass Route to Bypass Ambarkhana
Addressing press corps, Commerce Minister Muktadir stated that a dilapidated stretch starting from Saheb Bazar in Khadimnagar Union will be expanded into a 24-foot-wide concrete road. Once operational, heavy cargo trucks heading towards the bypass will no longer need to navigate through the crowded central Ambarkhana intersection, diverting instead via Kalagul Market and Khadimpara.
Tea Garden Connectivity & Airport 4-Laning
To streamline urban transit and boost regional tourism, the Ministry has mapped out several key developments:
4-Laning Airport Road: The arterial route connecting Sylhet MAG Osmani International Airport to Ambarkhana will be expanded into a 4-lane corridor.
Scenic Tea Garden Bypass: A fresh connecting road will be constructed stretching from Lakkatura to the Television Center gate, passing through lush tea estates to create a scenic route for both commuters and tourists.
Park Revitalization: The historic Jalalabad Children's Park adjacent to the Sylhet Circuit House is being fully restored under the jurisdiction of the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC).
SCC Road Network and Dhaka-Sylhet Highway Timeline
Highlighting highway progress, the Minister assured that construction on the Badaghat Bypass and the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway expansion is advancing rapidly. The Dhaka-Sylhet Highway is projected to become fully operational for traffic by December 2028, with minor finishing works wrapping up within the subsequent two to three months.
Referring to municipal connectivity, he noted that out of the 800 kilometers of roads spanning 42 wards under SCC, a considerable portion remains unpaved. The administration aims to pave every remaining unpaved street within the government's current term to ensure full accountability to the public.
"Development should not be confined merely to constructing roads and bridges. The true measure of development lies in bringing comfort, peace of mind, and higher purchasing power to people's daily lives," Minister Muktadir remarked.
