Sylhet’s Baluchar-Ecopark Road Nears Completion Under BDT 18 Crore Project

Constructed at an estimated cost of BDT 18 crore, the approximately 2.5-kilometer-long Baluchar-Ecopark road in Sylhet city is now nearing its final stages of completion. Featuring a 24-foot-wide reinforced concrete (RCC) roadway, spacious drainage systems, and pedestrian footpaths, the infrastructure is expected to permanently resolve chronic commuting struggles for students and residents heading towards Sylhet Agricultural University, the Engineering College, and the Ecopark.

Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) Administrator Abdul Quiyum Chowdhury physically inspected the final-stage casting work of the road and drainage networks on Saturday afternoon (November 7, 2026), reviewing project progress and material quality standards on-site.

Key Features of the Infrastructure Project

Spanning from Baluchar Shahmadani Eidgah through Sylhet Agricultural University to the Ecopark, the project incorporates several vital elements:

Road Expansion: The thoroughfare has been expanded and paved with durable RCC to withstand heavy traffic and ensure longevity.

Extensive Drainage System: To prevent seasonal waterlogging, massive 12-foot-wide drainage channels (6 feet on each side) have been built alongside the roadway.

Integrated Footpaths: Heavy slabs placed over the drainage canals double as wide, secure pedestrian walkways.

Administrator's Remarks and Directives

Speaking after the inspection, SCC Administrator Abdul Quiyum Chowdhury stated, "The Baluchar-Ecopark road is a critical artery for the city. Thousands of students, faculty members, and citizens traveling to the agricultural university, engineering college, and Ecopark use this route daily. Our goal is to alleviate long-standing commuting hardships and establish safe, seamless connectivity."

He emphasized that SCC remains dedicated to planned urbanization, prioritizing durable road expansions, robust drainage management, and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure. The Administrator instructed contractors and supervising engineers to maintain strict quality control and expedite remaining finishing works.

The inspection tour was accompanied by SCC Executive Engineer Lipu Singha, Public Relations Officer (Additional Charge) Nehar Ranjan Purkayastha, and other municipal engineers and officials.
