New legal changes have made it easier than ever to obtain Canadian citizenship, especially for those of Canadian descent. Under the new law,
anyone born outside of Canada before December 15, 2025, who can prove their Canadian ancestry will be eligible for citizenship. Previously, this benefit was limited to first-generation children.
The change has led to a surge in the number of Canadians living in the United States seeking the necessary documents. Applications to the National Library and Archives of Quebec have also increased significantly.
It is now reported that it takes about 10 months to obtain a citizenship certificate. According to analysts, many are showing interest in moving to Canada to reconnect with their roots and due to the changing political environment.
This interest has increased especially after the 2024 US presidential election.
Government data shows that between 2016 and 2020, about 34,700 US citizens received permanent residency in Canada.
This number will increase to 42,300 between 2021 and 2024. About 8,000 people have already received permanent residency this year.
The new law also states that Canadian-born people born after December 15, 2025, will also be able to obtain citizenship if one of their parents is already a Canadian citizen or has lived in Canada for at least 1,095 days.
This change was made after the Ontario Superior Court of Justice declared the first-generation citizenship rule unconstitutional in 2023.
