It has been decided to appoint Indian BJP leader and former minister Dinesh Trivedi as the Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh. He will replace Prannoy Verma, who is currently serving as the High Commissioner.

A report published by the Indian media Hindustan Times on Sunday (April 19) said that after a long time, India is appointing a political figure as ambassador to a neighboring country. His previous ambassador Prannoy Verma is being sent to Brussels as the European Union envoy.

The report mentioned that this decision is also being considered as a kind of message to the diplomats of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. However, it was also stated that the approval of the government in Dhaka will be sought before the appointment.

Dinesh Trivedi previously served as the Railway Minister and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare as a member of the Trinamool Congress. He left the party and joined the BJP in 2021.

The report claims that India has taken this decision as an attempt to restore relations between India and Bangladesh. Tensions between the two countries arose after the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Bilateral relations also deteriorated during the tenure of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, who took charge later.

According to analysts, Dinesh Trivedi's appointment suggests that India is keen to send experienced and influential political figures to diplomatic posts to strengthen relations with neighboring countries.
