Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) has reported a significant breakthrough in curbing urban crime, claiming a major success in its latest operations. A coordinated special drive across six police stations over the past eight months has resulted in the arrest of 314 suspected muggers.
The Media Cell of SMP confirmed the statistics through a post on their official Facebook page on Wednesday night (May 6).
According to the data, police intervention has intensified compared to the previous period. Until August last year, only 112 muggers were apprehended over an eight-month span. However, in the subsequent eight months, that figure surged to 314—marking a nearly three-fold increase in arrests.
The crackdown also reflects a broader rise in law enforcement activity under various categories:
Metropolitan Act Arrests: Arrests rose sharply from 1,002 in the previous period to 3,882 in the last eight months.
Warrant Executions: A total of 3,275 warrants were executed recently, up from 2,350. Conviction warrant executions also saw a rise from 274 to 385.
Case Resolution: The number of settled cases increased from 1,129 to 1,339, while arrests in regular cases jumped from 1,058 to 1,741.
SMP officials emphasized that these proactive measures are part of an ongoing commitment to ensure public safety and maintain law and order across the metropolitan area.
