In a significant move to ease the labor crunch in critical sectors, the Italian government has authorized an additional 8,865 seasonal work permits under the 2026 "Decreto Flussi" program. This strategic top-up aims to address the urgent staffing gaps in agriculture and the hospitality industry ahead of the peak summer season.

The decision, signed by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies on April 28, was officially made public on May 6. The move comes after intense demand from business associations warning of potential losses due to a shortage of non-EU workers.

Key Breakdown of the New Quota:

Agriculture Sector: 5,389 permits have been allocated for farming and food processing.

Tourism & Hospitality: 3,476 permits are reserved for hotels, resorts, and catering services.

According to ministerial sources, candidates who applied during the "Click Day" windows in January and February but missed out due to exhausted quotas will have their applications automatically reconsidered under this new allocation. Fresh applications can also be lodged through the Interior Ministry's online portal by authorized Italian employers, provided they ensure adequate housing for the workers.

Immigration experts advise swift action, noting that such supplementary quotas in the past have been snapped up within days. Under current regulations, workers must complete their mandatory registration within 48 hours of arriving in Italy.

The surge in demand for South Asian workers, particularly in Italy’s agrarian heartlands and tourist hotspots, highlights the country’s growing reliance on foreign labor to sustain its economic momentum.
