Following the tragic murder of RAB member Imon Acharya, who was stabbed to death while chasing muggers, law enforcement agencies in Sylhet have launched an aggressive city-wide crackdown. In a major coordinated sweep spanning the last 32 hours, the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) arrested 76 individuals for various criminal offenses and penalized 170 vehicles for violating traffic regulations.
Manzurul Alam, Deputy Commissioner of SMP, confirmed the operational details on Monday (May 25).
According to police sources, detective branches and local precinct teams executed simultaneous raids across the metropolitan area. The 76 detainees include suspects facing regular criminal charges, smuggled goods traders, drug dealers, gamblers, and fugitives with outstanding arrest warrants.
During the targeted operations, authorities seized a substantial cache of smuggled Indian cosmetics alongside 10 pieces of Yaba tablets from different locations.
Simultaneously, the SMP Traffic Division intensified its vigil on the streets to curb illegal vehicle movements and bolster urban security. Checkpoints set up at strategic intersections resulted in legal actions against 170 vehicles for failing to comply with transport laws and lacking valid documentation.
SMP officials emphasized that these proactive security measures and zero-tolerance drives will continue rigorously to restore absolute law and order and eliminate criminal networks from the city.
